    Wow i thought that napolean was smarter than to take on the british navy in his attempt to seal off the british isle from the rest of europe. So then the british reacted with more trade and smuggling and that lead to the war of 1812, when we thought that the british were going to invade from canada to reclaim their long lost colonies.

    Well, it really wasn’t that Napoleon was too stupid to take on the navy, it was more that the British saw that he was dominating all of continental Europe, and in an attempt to contain him, they issued the Orders in Council. And, considering that all of Napoleon’s power was land based, it is no surprise that trying to get the Orders in Council repealed was a major bargaining chip in Napoleon’s negotiations, having such a tempting offer being made by the US’ Macon’s Bill No. 2.
